Announcing the Formation of the Vintage Sedan Racers Group-East
January 26, 2001 – For years, vintage sanctioning bodies and tracks have had "title" events, "featured" marques and "grand" marshals, all with a focus on "more, bigger, better, faster…" Some of the best racing is being ignored and we want to do something about it! The formation of the Vintage Sedan Racing Group-East is specifically for the purpose of promoting, recognizing and organizing vintage and historic "B Sedan" racing cars, drivers and enthusiasts. VSRG-East has scheduled already two Magnaflow Vintage 2.5 Sedan Challenge events on the East Coast, the goal to meet West Coast VSRG competitors for the Magnaflow Vintage 2.5 Sedan Challenge National Championship Races at Daytona in the fall of 2002.
Small Sedans provide tremendous racing for relatively reasonable costs. Historically, the SCCA 2.5 Trans Am ® Challenge has provided, perhaps, the closest, most exciting and entertaining Sedan racing in the United States. The snapshot-in-time that the VSRG is seeking to replicate is the SCCA 2.5 Challenge of 1971 and 1972. We have identified over 80 cars that potentially are eligible for participation in VSRG-East events under Historic SCCA B Sedan and C Sedan rules. The first two events scheduled consist of the VSCCA Governor’s Cup Races at Virginia International Raceway May 5th and 6th, 2001 and the Homecoming, Featuring the Gold Cup Historic Races, VIR’ s "birthday party," to be held June 8th through June 10th, 2001. We want you to come!
VSRG-East has been chartered by the Vintage Sedan Racers Group, an organization with a five-race series in place with HSR-West. Information can be found on the Internet at
www.bsedan.com. The rules for the Magnaflow Vintage 2.5 Sedan Challenge can be found under the VSRG tab on the main page. Printed copies are available, just inquire. In order to attract the largest number of folks and integrate existing cars and configurations (engines, tires), VSRG-East has been allowed by VSRG to relax certain rules through the 2001 season. Specifically, VSRG-East will allow L-20B engines and size P225/45D-13 Hoosier Street TD tires for Datsun PL-510’s and size 225/50-14 Hoosier Street TD’s for Alfa Romeo’s currently competing in SVRA and HSR events. The goal is to allow cars currently active and legal in East Coast venues to "slide" right into the VSRG-East events with minimal, if any, changes for the inaugural 2001 season.
The only significant rule required for participation in VSRG-East events in 2001 is that all single or dual overhead cam engine cars must weigh a minimum of 1.1 lb/cc as they leave the track, without the driver. We will have a separate technical inspection and scales at VSRG events. This is heavier than the accepted SVRA policy, but provides an advantage for retaining the original homologated engine displacement and is historically grounded in SCCA B & C Sedan Rules. This also offers an equivalency for the smaller- engine cars that will encourage parity. The tire rules do not allow the use of the Hoosier Radial, Goodyear GS-CS or the Avon ACB DOT Radials. There will be a separate 30-minute feature race, for VSRG cars only, with trophies at the Governor’s Cup races in May. A separate race class for the VSRG cars is in place for the June Homecoming event. Depending on the turnout, we may be able to stage a separate 30-minute race at that event as well.
VSRG-East has approached the Vintage Drivers Club of America (VDCA), SVRA and HSR to include additional VSRG Magnaflow Vintage 2.5 Sedan Championship rounds this year. Further details will be released as they are finalized.
We would like you to join the VSRG at no cost by registering on the VSRG page at
www.bsedan.com or by responding by mail to the address of the VSRG-East Director, Peter Krause. Included in this mailing is the application for the first event at VIR in May, a two-day event for only $200.00. VSRG-East cars will run in the "selected later cars" group of the VSCCA event. That means three sessions on Saturday and a practice and two races on Sunday. A school and test day will be held Friday, May 4th at extra cost. Hotel info is included on the entry form.A final word… If you receive this letter, your car is eligible and desired. Please come and enjoy this event. It will be an opportunity for all of us to get together and have a good time and enjoy each other and our cars. Many of you know me through my association with different vintage organizations, but this is just for fun. I know most of you, and I would race with any of you! Looking forward to your reply, I am
Yours truly,
Peter Krause, Director, Vintage Sedan Racers Group - East
